Challenge #54 Purple Haze

I have been away from the Diva's Challenges for quite awhile but when I saw this week's challenge I thought of a recently tangled bookmark in which I used a deep purple.  My answer to Challenge #54, "Purple Haze."

Vitamin "Z" - Free Bookmark

After a nasty cold, and very little desire to do anything, I was finally able to sit and draw yesterday.  It had been awhile, with the Christmas chaos and all, since I had allowed myself to just create.  With music on and pen to paper, I was quickly reminded just how nourishing it is to be disciplined about my creative time, especially Zentangle.  It reminds me of taking vitamins. Especially Vitamin D in the winter.  Below is a bookmark I created to remind myself to also take some Vitamin "Z" every day.

Happy New Year to all.  May it be a healthy and happy 2012!

Black Tiles

Working on Black Zentangle tiles has proven to be a lot of fun.  Discovering what pens will work best has been a journey with unexpected surprises.  What has worked best for me is using a variety of pens and using a layered approach.  These are some examples of tiles created using a variety of white pens, white and colored pencils, as well as metallic markers.  Although first disappointed that the white pens did not respond to the black tiles in the same manner that the black pens respond to the white tiles, by taking the time to play at this, not work at it, the black tiles are now an enriching "zen" experience with endless possibilities!

Parasail•z Tangle Pattern

Parasailz
The Inspiration
The recent weekly challenge, from http://iamthedivaczt.blogspot.com/, challenged me to play with the ZentangleÒ pattern Paradox and is what started this adventure.  I find it interesting that patterns I initially am not drawn to, when experimented with, become some of my favorites.

I got a real chuckle out of the Zentangle blog post response to this challenge, specifically the last image in the post.  True to the promise of what Zentangle has to offer, the lines on my paper started to dance and take form.  One thing led to another, and the analogies appeared one by one. Or was it two by two?

The Tangle Unfolding
The shape of the sail, a triangle with curved lines, began the unfolding. Having an “Escher” moment, I completed the square in a mirror type fashion.  It was then that I had what I like to tell my students is an “Emeril” moment. Bam! Two sails!  Better yet, a Pair of Sails to go with a Pair of Docks!

It wasn’t until later that the second “Emeril” moment occurred. While considering the possibilities of shading this pattern, the “Z” sprang to life and then I really had a good laugh.

How unexpected, what fun!  I just had to pass it on.

Quilted Threads Class Mosaic

Quilters are awesome artists!  While playing with their class mosaic, this group of tanglers were truly looking at the relationships between tiles and pattern, much like one would do when selecting material and designing a quilt.  It was fascinating to listen to their reasoning for moving or turning a tile. The only wish is that we had more time to play with the mosaic.

Winter Blues?

There is nothing like a "little" Zentangle to lift the winter blues.  While the traditional Zentangle tile is a great pick me up, sometimes something a little larger is needed.
In January, I found this to be the case.

Sharpie permanent markers are wonderful pens to use on a variety of surfaces.  Take a closer look at my winter project, click here:  Lazy Remodel.

The back corner of a closet is a great place to start if you are a bit uncertain about your first try.

Happy Tangling!

Weekly Zentangle Challenge

Challenge #184  Ing by Molly Hollibaugh

Challenge #76  In Celebration of Home and July 4

This first tile I drew some time ago.  It wasn't until after I completed the tile that I saw the resemblance to pine trees, rolling hills, an ice scattered river and orchards.  All of these can be found around my home.

This second piece is from a poster I created for a Community Zentangle I am coordinating for my town's July Fourth celebration.  Click HERE to see the poster.

Challenge #42 Breast Cancer Awareness and Hope
Using the pattern Cūrd, I enhanced my original tile with a border and a red heart.

Challenge # 13 Non-Dominant Hand

What came to mind, as I was working on this challenge, is a quote that appears on one of my students emails: "Our strength is often composed of the weakness we're damned if we're going to show."  -  Mignon McLaughlin     Thank you Joyce!

Challenge #11 - Monotangle

Challenge #8 - Hearts for Artoo!

Challenge #6 - Ixorus

Challenge #5 - Orbs

Challenge #4 - Starry Eyed Surprise

Challenge #3 - String with Eyes Closed

After:

Challenge #2 - Two Pencil String

I thought Echoism was a "fitting" tangle for this challenge.

This has been great fun. Remember, there are no musts in Zentangle. Participate at any level you wish.  Not all the tiles I am showing here made it into Laura's photo gallery.  Some weeks, life just isn't that flexible.  I may get to a challenge after the deadline. I may not have time to scan the results in time to submit them. Or, I may not have time at all.

Be good to yourselves and join in at any level, if this looks like fun!
