January 3 "Tile•A•Day" Zentangle

This tile was completed in three sessions today. One wonderful aspect of drawing a Zentangle is that you can do it in snatches of time, easily picking up where you left off or coming back to it with new perspective, each time enjoying the meditative benefits.

This tile started with a simple string of three parallel lines.  Patterns were selected at random, nothing predetermined. I also wanted to try my new Sakura Koi Coloring Brush pens, so there is some shading done with pen and some with pencil. This tile was also shaded using a pencil and the tip of my finger to soften the shade.  If you have always used a shading tool, try going without.  The shading is less controlled and broader in area, but there is a softness achieved with the finger tip that can not be had when using a shading tool.  Enjoy!

*Anyone who has completed a Basics class will do fine in an Advanced class.  That said, some students feel more comfortable staying at a slow pace and repeat the Basics class.  In this case, I suggest that those repeating Basics bring their tiles from their first class and I will do my best to change up the patterns.

Happy 2013 Everyone!

I hope you all had a Happy 2013 celebration, quiet or otherwise!
It is going to be a great year for tangling!
Here is my first tangle of the year, which I have already given away.  My only resolution this year is to attempt to draw a tangle a day and share them here as often as possible. Look for my winter class schedule to be posted here later today, along with today's tangle.  To all my students, I will be sending out the promised survey regarding special workshops for this winter.
Happy Tangling!

Zentangle Inspired Christmas Workshop #2 - December 15, 2012

These sparkly stars were drawn on black Zentangle tiles using white and silver pens, charcoal white pencils and paper stumps.
Very quick and easy to do!
These cute trees were created using the official Zentangle pattern "Flux" and a pattern I created, in 2009 at CZT training seminar #2, which I call "Bark."

In this recent Zendala Workshop everyone drew on the same pre-strung Zendala tile and we randomly picked the tangle patterns we would use. All are very similar, and all are very different!

Zentangle and Mrs. Garfield?

A Visit to Mentor Ohio

While on vacation, I encountered an unexpected and pleasant surprise while touring the historic home of President and Mrs. Garfield in Mentor, Ohio.  Mrs. Garfield was quite an artist. If anyone has the opportunity to visit this home, I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

What stood out immediately was the wallpaper in the entrance hallway.  It has Zentangle written all over it.  See for yourself:

This wallpaper appears in other rooms of the home as well, which tells me it must have had great appeal to Mrs. Garfield.

President Garfield was assassinated before completing the first year of his presidency, and before completing the initial renovations to this home.  Most of what exists today is a credit to Mrs. Garfield.  Among many other projects, she expanded the home to include a memorial Presidential library in which to house all of President Garfield's important papers and books. This is perhaps the first Presidential library ever to be built.  Mrs. Garfield oversaw all of the design and construction.  Quite a feat for a woman at the turn of the 20th century.

The library is a room in which one could just sit for hours and hours.  The architectural details are just beautiful.  I encourage anyone with an opportunity to visit the home to do so.  Admission is a very reasonable $5.

The wallpaper design is original and this second photo shows the old paper(circa 1880) next to the new paper created for the restoration.  A very good match.

Most disappointing on this trip was to continue on to Columbus only to discover that Lisa Ruschman, fellow CZT #2 and friend, lives in Mentor!  Anyone who wants to venture to Mentor, OH - I can tell you it is a lovely corner of Ohio, and the USA.  The Garfield home would make for a great Mansion Tangle Hunt.

Happy Tangling!
